Does Matt Lauer Smoke Weed?

Matt Lauer made headlines this week after getting fired as the co-host of the Today Show, a post he’s held since 1997. The embattled Lauer, who was accused of sexual misconduct in an extensive complaint from a colleague, is just one of several mainstreams media players who have been accused of rather heinous acts over the past several months.

Lauer admitted to as much on Thursday and issued a statement apologizing for his actions. Despite his weak attempt at public image restoration, Lauer’s reputation remains forever tarnished—and deservingly so.

In the midst of Lauer’s fall from grace, there are plenty of questions to be asked. His relatability on-air made him such a likable public figure, but we now know that was mostly a facade. His hard-working, family man persona also poses one major question in the cannabis community—does Matt Lauer smoke weed?

We certainly hope he’s not one of us. But with all of his laundry unfolding, let’s take a look at whether or not Lauer had some weed-related secrets of his own.

Who Is Matt Lauer?

Before his downfall, Lauer was one of the most well-known and respected journalists in America. After dropping out of Ohio University’s Scripps College of Communication back in 1979, Lauer returned to school in 1997 to earn his undergraduate degree at the age of 39.

He originally began his broadcasting career in 1979 as a producer and later, on-air reporter for WOWK-TV in Huntington, West Virginia.

Lauer then began to move around the country, hosting a number of programs throughout Boston, Philadelphia, Providence, and Richmond. In 1986 he began co-hosting the shows  Made In New York and Fame, Fortune and Romance, while also doing some work for ESPN.

Lauer joined the Today Show in 1994 as a full-time news anchor, while also co-anchoring Today in New York and Live at Five. He eventually became the full-time co-host of the Today Show in 1997, replacing Bryant Gumbel.

Puff or Pass?

Does Matt Lauer Smoke Weed?

So back to the question: does Matt Lauer smoke weed? Well, there’s not much evidence to support he does. However, he’s interviewed a couple of pro-cannabis figures in the past and seemed pretty receptive to what they had to say.

Back in 2009, Lauer interviewed Joanna Coles, the Editor-In-Chief of the magazine Marie Claire. The magazine had just come out with an article aptly titled  “Stiletto Stoners,” which focused on successful women who happen to smoke weed.

They were described by Cole as “highly functioning women who – you know – these are not people who are lying on park benches – the typical picture of someone who’s addicted to drugs. They’re casual, recreational users who find it very effective.” Lauer seemed skeptical at first, but keep in mind, this was back in 2009, well before the current “green rush.”

Three years later, Lauer interviewed legendary stoner Willie Nelson about his new book “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die: Musings From the Road,” which heavily chronicled his weed use. “I haven’t seen any side effects,” Nelson famously declared in the interview.

Final Hit: Does Matt Lauer Smoke Weed?

Unfortunately, there’s not much hard evidence to suggest Matt Lauer smokes weed. While some of his interviews might raise some suspicions, the jury is still out on whether Lauer likes to toke up. But now that he has some free time on his hands following his recent unemployment, maybe we’ll get some further evidence. But for now, the answer remains a resounding “No”.

And just like that, the cannabis community exhales.
